Vienna is the capital of Austria and was formerly the capital of the glorious Habsburg Empire. The famous Habsburg family shaped the city to what it is today and their efforts have assured the whole of the inner city a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides the historic 'inner city' Vienna has many other interesting sights including the massive Schobrunn Palace and the Prater with its giant Ferris wheel. Vienna offers an eclectic mix of art, gastronomy, music and of course its famous coffee houses. In addition, there are plenty of perfect venues for meetings and incentive events testified by organisations such as OPEC, IAEA and the United Nations. Conference facilities abound making Vienna an excellent place to hold a social or corporate event.

Founded around 500 BC, Vienna was originally a Celtic settlement. In 15 BC, the city became a Roman frontier city ('Vindobona') offering the Roman Empire protection against Germanic tribes to the north. During the Middle Ages, Vienna was home to the Babenberg Dynasty and in 1440 it became the resident city of the famous Habsburg family. The Habsburgs helped the city to grow and actively encouraged the arts, science and gastronomy.

The Ottoman invasions of Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries were stopped twice just outside the city. Then in the 19th century, 1805 to be exact, Vienna became the capital of the Austrian Empire — and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire — and played a major role in European and World politics. In 1918, after the First World War, Vienna became the capital of the First Austrian Republic. Between 1938 and the end of the Second World War, Vienna lost its status as a capital to Berlin. After 1945, the city was initially divided into four zones by the Allies and became a hot-bed for international espionage between the west and east.
